Russell City

Maple Court @ A Street, Hayward, CA

Commissioned by the City of Hayward

2012

"The city may be gone, but the memories live on." Russel City was a vibrant, unincorporated place that, in the 40's thru the 60's was home to one of the most diverse communities in the Bay Area. We revived its memory (it was demolished in 1964 to make way for an industrial park) by bringing out its artistic roots and culture. Russel City was known for its juke joints and blues culture. In an effort to make visible the history and daily lives of its residents, we highlighted some of the artists that were known to play there - including Ray Charles, Big Mama Thornton, and T-Bone Walker as well as local acts.

We've had the pleasure of working with Josh on multiple highly visible mural projects throughout the City of Hayward for over a decade. He’s a true professional, making each project an easy and collaborative process from design to implementation. The Hayward Adult School mural was no exception and stands as a vibrant reflection of our shared vision for public art.
